Cardinal Brenes exhorts to be aware of children: "They are a treasure that we have to take care of"

During his homily this Sunday, September 11, from the Metropolitan Cathedral, Cardinal Leopoldo Brenes, Archbishop of Managua, urged Nicaraguan families to be aware of children “who are a treasure that we must take care of.”

«How beautiful that God blesses the family and from the family is also telling us that a girl is born in a family —Mary—, that girl is also blessed and cared for by God so that she is a tabernacle where the only one will be born. Son of God”, preached the Catholic leader who today celebrated the birth of the Virgin Mary with his parishioners.

The prelate expressed that as a Church they celebrate the greatness of childhood, “and Pope Francis has told us how to take care of children, children are a treasure that we have to take care of and there is the great example of our good God, in our mother the Blessed Virgin Mary.”

The prelate’s call comes days after the murder of two girls aged seven and 10 in Ciudad Belén, Managua, whose bodies were found in a vacant lot.

Without making explicit reference to previous events, the priest lamented that “Unfortunately we have a large part of a world, of a society that wants to destroy the family and begins by destroying it through children.”

He also pointed out that “there are those who have promoted not being born children or spending thousands and thousands investing instead of investing it in greatness, in promoting love, promoting peace and harmony in the world.”

“Hate breaks the peace”

On the other hand, Brenes affirmed that “the mother of Jesus came to the world to bring peace” and also came to break hatred, “such as contradictions, and Christ comes to promote forgiveness, forgiveness that is often not understood.” , but Christ has come so that we may have life and have life in abundance».

He also indicated that “how beautiful it is to be able to recognize our weaknesses, because it is sad when someone full of arrogance says that they have no sin. How sad it is to meet among us people who discriminate…».

The archbishop insisted that we must ask God to forgive sins. “The greatest value that we Christians can have is to seek the person of Jesus (…) Our great treasure is to have Christ in our Hearts.”

Brenes concluded by asserting that one must always forgive, “because he who does not forgive, I think he must be sick, his mind and heart must be sick. Let us ask the Lord to give us the grace to be men and women who can forgive.

The cardinal’s call to forgive comes at a time when Nicaragua is suffering a social and political crisis, where the Ortega regime has attacked the Catholic Church, jailed nine priests and prevented freedom of worship.
