The city of Niterói, in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, set up a special operational scheme to guarantee the tranquility of those who will spend the New Year in the city. Without the traditional fireworks display on Icaraí beach, the municipality wants to encourage residents to stay in their neighborhoods by placing 10 low impact fires in specific points in the North, South and Oceanic Region. More than a thousand professionals will be involved in the organization of the New Year’s Eve in Niterói.
The fireworks display will take place in the Barreto neighborhoods; Vila Ipiranga/Fonseca/Engenhoca (Municipal School Marilza Medina); Caramujo (Sports and Social Park); Santa Rosa (Monument of Our Lady Help of Christians); Ingá (Macaquinho/Morro do Palácio); Morro do Cavalão (Reservoir); Jurujuba (Forte do Pico); Pendotiba (Reservoir); Camboinhas (Caixa d’Água) and Piratininga (Morro da Peça).
The secretary of Public Order, Paulo Henrique de Moraes, said that “this year, we have a differential: the city hall is taking care within the new normal. Let’s take fireworks to neighborhoods to encourage people to hold small celebrations in their homes or neighborhoods. Fireworks will be at elevation points. Our main guideline is: celebrate at home”, he explained.

Traditionally closed to traffic, this year, Praia de Icaraí will have a normal flow of vehicles. The population must be aware of changes in parking schedules on the roads. For those traveling, the city recommends using public transport. The municipality’s civil defense set up a special scheme to deal with emergencies.
Public agents will be supported by the Integrated Public Security Center, which has 522 cameras monitoring the city 24 hours a day. Agents from all public agencies will be on site for further monitoring and to expand the possibility of quick action if necessary. An operational support base will be set up at Praça Getúlio Vargas, in Icaraí, to support public agencies.
