The president of Renovación Nacional, Francisco Chahuán, reaffirmed his party’s commitment to continue with the constitutional process, although he ruled out a priori putting forward a mechanism that would ensure citizen participation. “We must not forget that our political commission has already declared itself in favor of continuing the process to achieve a new and good Constitution,” the senator said in an interview with The Mercury.
In this sense, he indicated that the results of Sunday, September 4, were due to the fact that “for the first time, since 1988, the center-right and the center-left are on the same track. And that implies building the same commons, capacity for articulation, understanding that The Constitution has to be a pact of coexistence and a home for all”
In relation to the declarations of senators from his community who do not want to continue with a constitutional process and who declared themselves in favor of continuing the conversation through a commission of experts, Chahuán maintained that “there are different opinions and we do not rule out any mechanism. party will resolve institutionally”.
“I think there has to be a mixture of citizen participation and experience. We have been in permanent contact, for example, with former President Lagos, since April, we managed to build an agenda by meeting with former President Frei, with sectors of the PPD, with parliamentarians from the DC, with sectors of the radical party, with civil society organizations, with Amarillos por Chile,” he added.
Regarding the role that the Government of President Boric should play in this process, the senator was critical and stated that it is Congress that has the power to advance in the creation of a new Magna Carta. “It is up to the Government to act without any degree of moral superiority, contrary to what Minister Jackson proposed at the time. I second the process, but it is Congress that has the power to advance in this process. It is necessary that the Government abandon maximalist and refoundational spirits, and commit to moderation and dialogue,” he said.
Finally, regarding the new government cabinet, he agreed with the appointment of Ana Lya Uriarte as Minister Secretary General of the Presidency of Chile. “I think that Ana Lya Uriarte, she is a person who talks and is going to help carry out the agenda and attend to social emergencies,” she pointed out.
