Foreign Minister Miguel Ángel Rodríguez Mackay today presented the President peter castle his letter of resignation after learning of differences over the course the government has taken on international issues.
The still minister informed the president that he tried to direct the sector “from the rigor of the academic and professional.”
“I have accompanied his management during this month and 4 days in the position he entrusted to me. In that period, the objective set was to revitalize the Foreign Policy of Peru, correcting errors and trying to strengthen the course of the international life of our country”, reads the document.
Executive sources explained to Peru21 that there had been no coordination between Palacio and Torre Tagle since Rodríguez Mackay’s administration. Likewise, there were events that marked this distance, the most recent being the position of the Foreign Minister for Peru to sign the Sea Convention (Convemar).
For the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, without Convemar Peru is “extraordinarily vulnerable” since it contains protection levels of not only three miles of territorial sea but up to 12 miles of territorial sea and then 12 more miles of contiguous zone.
President Castillo also addressed this issue, but did not second the chancellor. On the contrary, he said that he respects the Constitution and that is why the 200 miles of Peruvian sea should be defended.
“We are respectful of the Constitution and we must continue to defend the last millimeter not only of the sea that we have but of the national territory. There has been, in any case, some information that we are correcting, I am going to sit down and talk with our foreign minister and calm there is nothing to discuss there “, referred.
Another episode that shows lack of coordination is the pronouncement of the president on September 8 recognizing the sovereignty of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, when in August the Foreign Ministry had announced the dissolution of diplomatic relations between Peru and that State.
