MADRID, Spain.- Carlos of England, who with the death of his mother Isabel II this Thursday automatically became King Carlos III, visited Cuba in March 2019.
At that time Prince of Wales, Carlos III arrived in Havana accompanied by his wife Camila, Duchess of Cornwall, now Queen Consort.
During the visit, part of a tour of the Caribbean, Carlos III placed a floral offering before the José Martí monument, a protocol that high-ranking visits comply with on the Island; and he met with Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel.
During their three-day stay, the couple also toured the streets of Old Havana; she attended a concert by the renowned Camerata Romeu, in the Minor Basilica of San Francisco de Asís; he visited a British classic car club in Havana; and the Center for Molecular Immunology.
Although the official press did not give the coverage that events of this magnitude usually have, foreign media pointed out that the trip sought to consolidate and strengthen bilateral relations, within the rapprochement process that began in 2016 with the trip to Cuba of the then Foreign Minister, Phillip Hammond.
For its part, the official residence of the then heir to the throne said in a statement: “The visit of the Prince and the Duchess will highlight the links between the peoples of the United Kingdom and Cuba, and will explore crucial issues related to the arts, youth entrepreneurship, heritage restoration and sustainable agriculture”.
Said visit was the first official stay of members of the British royal family in Cuba, which received more than 70 years ago Edward VIII (1894-1972), who became Duke of Windsor after abdicating the throne of England in favor of his brother minor, George VI.
The great-uncle of Prince Charles visited Havana on more than one occasion with his wife, the American Wallis Simpson.
