Nadia Morales (12 years old) was killed by a stray bullet in April 2021, while doing homework at home. More than a year after the fact, the prosecution advanced in the investigation and assured in a hearing that a drug confrontation took place in front of her house, that the girl was injured and that those now accused of homicide denied her assistance.
Her family leaves the house with Nadia “in her arms in search of a means of transport to take her to the hospital. It is at that moment that they see the defendants inside the Chevrolet vehicle, whom they ask for help, but they refuse to transfer the girl, fleeing the place. Finally, Nadia was transferred to the Pasteur Hospital by a neighbor, dying minutes later,” said Homicide Prosecutor Mirta Morales, according to an interlocutory ruling to which she agreed. The conflict began when the two defendants, accompanied by at least three other people, all armed, arrived in the aforementioned car at the settlement located on Félix Laborde and Tibidabo, in the Villa Española neighborhood, to rebuke a man with whom they were confronted. One of the defendants yelled at this man’s 16-year-old son to open the door and asked him to call a relative, argued with the minor and hit him hard. As a result of that, the shooting began that killed Nadia, who lived in the next house.
The girl was accompanied by her grandmother, her parents and her brothers, ages 14 and 17. She was doing her homework and they began to hear screaming which then ended in gunshots. There the mother asked them to go “to a safer part of the house and lie on the floor.” When Nadia got up from her chair to do what her mother asked her to do, she received the bullet that went through the sheet metal of her house.
At the end of August, the appeals court upheld the judge’s decision to aggravate the judicial situation of the two defendants for having found, in the opinion of the prosecution, that they committed the crime in the presence of minors. This peculiarity is an aggravating circumstance of homicide and supposes that, if there is a conviction, it is greater.
After the court of appeals allowed him to add the aggravating circumstance to the prosecution, the way was paved for the Public Ministry to present the accusation and begin the oral trial.
Agustina, the girl who managed to save herself
A year and 14 blocks away from Nadia’s crime, an eight-year-old girl received a stray bullet but, despite the fact that it hit her in the head, she was able to recover.
In June this year, she was lying in her mother’s bed when a bullet came through the ceiling and hit her in the head. Having crossed the ceiling, the projectile slowed down and was not lethal.
Lucas Seguí, her father, checked on his daughter – who began to cry – and immediately went out into the street in search of help. She asked the first car that passed the transfer to the Emergency Room and went straight to the Pasteur Hospital.
The man reviewed the moment his daughter was injured. He said that after dinner he heard a noise and, instead of a bullet, he thought it was a stone. “We had finished eating around 10:30 p.m. and we felt like a stone hit the ceiling. My daughter was already in bed with my wife, who told me that it had not been a stone and that something had hit Agustina in the head. I turned on the light and saw my daughter with the shot in the head and blood, “he said.
“I’m trying to find some help so I can leave here, because Villa Española is very bad and it is a tremendous insecurity. At night you cannot live. My children come every night down this same street and more than once they have tried to rob them, “he added. Although the girl is progressing favorably, the father pointed out to Telemundo that I was sad “I spoke to her yesterday on video call and she was constantly crying and wondering why this had happened to her.”
