Santiago de Cuba: a woman sick with dengue dies due to lack of medical care

Santiago de Cuba, Dengue hemorrágico

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba. – The hemorrhagic dengue continues to claim lives in Santiago de Cuba. In the municipality of Songo-La Maya alone, at least five deaths have been reported in the month of August and so far in September, deaths that have not been recognized by the state press.

In most cases, the lack of attention and the excessive delay of the Integrated System of Medical Emergencies (SIUM) have been determining factors in deaths.

The last registered victim was Yumila González González, who died at approximately one morning today at the Ambrosio Grillo Surgical Clinical Hospital, a center “qualified” for the resection of patients with severe manifestations of the disease.

According to family and close friends, González had been presenting the so-called warning signs of the virus for several days: high and persistent fever, abdominal pain, dizziness, vomiting and diarrhea, blood loss in the form of hemorrhage associated with thrombocytopenia or a decrease in platelets, such as is also known.

“We took her to the La Maya polyclinic on Sunday and Monday morning because she had dengue fever, but they sent her home again without doing anything to her,” a Yumila neighbor told CubaNet.

This Wednesday, the 43-year-old woman was taken back to the center because her symptoms had worsened. She had muscle aches and bleeding, which was confirmed in a urinalysis that they performed, says a relative of hers.

“We took her to the polyclinic in the morning and she arrived at the hospital around three in the afternoon. From that time they had her lying on a chair until two in the morning when she died, “she denounced in Facebook Lisandra González Sánchez, sister of the victim.

“I apologize for all that hurts you, but today the pain is mine. And I say it out loud: the doctors at the Grillo hospital did not do their job since they were sleeping. They were called to medicate her for the pain and not even the nurses showed up,” lamented the woman.

“This only happens here because in other places when they go out they have the courage to work. My sister, may God have you in glory and calm, that everyone is going to pay for not having attended you, “the publication ends.

During all those hours, Yumila’s relatives were demanding medical attention from the doctors and nurses on duty, but they were only told that they had to wait. When Yumila was lifted from the chair there was a large amount of blood under her. It was then that they moved her body, already lifeless, to a bed.

“They let her die like a dog, they didn’t even check her when she arrived and the nurses sat around doing nothing. Every time they told her that Yumila felt bad, that her stomach hurt, they told them, in a tremendous bad way, that she had to wait, “she told CubaNet on condition of anonymity a source close to the family.

In similar circumstances, another woman named Elba died this week in La Maya. Elbita, as she was called in her closest environment, worked in the same Carlos Juan Finlay polyclinic, in the rehabilitation room. In this case, the victim died in this center because the emergency SIUM did not arrive. This was reported by her sister Mercedes López Nápoles on social networks.

“From my municipality I called the SIUM and the coordinator replied that there was only one bus in poor technical condition and that I had to go to the Reynaldos to look for a child who was suffering from dengue, that after the driver ate he would pick up the children. cases of La Maya, that my sister was not reported as serious. My brother went to the municipal government and had no answer. This also happened with my brother on August 19, who died due to lack of transportation, so now words are unnecessary, they let her die.

Napoles blamed both the health authorities and the local government for the negligence that ended his sister’s life, as both instances refused to do anything to transfer the patient to the provincial hospital.

In this regard, specialist doctor Roberto Serrano Delis commented: “If the Cuban regime continues to place so little value on people’s lives, the consequences will be catastrophic. It is not conceivable that a person could die in the chair of a guard body in a hospital. It is no longer just the shortage of medical supplies, it is also apathy and contempt for others that prevails in this country. I am very sorry about what happened. My condolences to the families of the victims.”

Despite the critical epidemiological situation in the municipality, the local government organized three days of festivities that took place at the end of last August. As a result of this event, there has been a slight increase in dengue cases in this area.

“Who would think of throwing a party in the middle of the current scenario. After those days, the disease has worsened, and it was to be expected, since the accumulation of waste and dirty water was a constant at the parties,” said the doctor.
