Bullfighting is a controversial tradition. There are those who criticize it and fight for its disappearance, considering it a cruel activity. There are those who defend it, considering it an important artistic expression and a source of cultural identity. Regardless of this legitimate debate, it is undeniable that it is, today, a legal activity in many parts of the country. In Mexico City, the local Constitution, which establishes the obligation to treat animals with dignity, contemplates their use in shows and provides that the regulation of said treatment will be given in accordance with the nature, characteristics and links of these animals with people. The Law for the Celebration of Public Shows expressly allows and regulates not only bullfighting shows, but also the market for section rights in the bullring. There is a Bullfighting Regulation that regulates bullfighting in much more detail, and the decision of the Supreme Court issued in 2020 (thesis 329/2020) is applicable to the city, as to the entire country, which declares it unconstitutional to prohibit the entry of minors to the bulls, considering that it restricts their access to culture and is discriminatory.
