Rejection of corrupt appointments does not advance in the Senate

The Chamber of Senators rejected the draft declaration “By which the sovereignty of our Republic of Paraguay is exalted.” The initiative was proposed by Juan Carlos “Kalé” Galaverna, national senator for the ANR (chartist). The legislator expressed that his motivation to present the document was due to the “very special, even spectacular and picturesque” interventions of officials from the embassy of the United States of America, alluding to the designations of “significantly corrupt” to Horacio Cartes and Hugo Velazquez.

“We are witnesses of several interventions by the ambassador and embassy officials, going to observe oral trials, going through press conferences reproduced by hype and cymbals with an incredible echo by the great media of our country. In case there was any doubt about how they continue to get their hands on our internal issues, belonging to our sovereignty, I read on the networks that yesterday the United States consul went to the Friendship Bridge to monitor the work of the Directorate of Migrations”, he questioned.

He pointed out that the role of legislators is to denounce the unfortunate role of Mario Abdo Benítez, President of the Republic, since he is in charge of international relations according to the constitutional mandate. “His reaction to him, as the project says, was timid, weak, shrunken and indifferent to the events that took place. It is true that a draft declaration will not change anything, but given the indolence of the person in charge of foreign relations, I believe that it would be of some use if a State power or part of a State power in this case, the Chamber of Senators, breaks with the habit of considering it normal or correct that they tamper with our national sovereignty,” he said.

The signing senators were; Antonio Barrios, Juan Darío Monges, Enrique Riera, Martín Arévalo, Silvio “Beto” Ovelar, Juan Carlos Galaverna and Sergio Godoy. Only 13 legislators voted for its approval, they went; Carlos Filizzola, Abel González, Esperanza Martínez, Hugo Richer, Miguel Fulgencio Rodríguez and Pedro Santacruz, in addition to the aforementioned signatories.
