Dr. Javier Nieto on national holidays and carnivals: ‘I agree that they should be done, but you have to plan’

Dr. Javier Nieto, pediatrician and infectologist, analyzed the measures that should be taken during the celebration of the patriotic parades, upcoming carnivals in the presence of Covid-19 and monkey or monkeypox in Panama.

“It is evident that there has been a reduction in covid-19 cases between 30% and 40% and a reduction in the positivity rate by at least 30%, there are no threats of seeing the health occupation because the percentage of hospitalization is low, just as the number of deaths has remained the same,” said Dr. Nieto about the current health situation in the country.

He added that “since November of last year, there has not been a new variant that replaces the current predominant variant that is Omicron, what there has been are their lineages.”

He recalled that “this year mass activities have been taking place; for example, softball games and concerts where there has been an agglomeration of people and this has not dramatically impacted the epidemiological figures.”

“If they asked me if I agree or not to hold national parades and carnivals, of course I agree, but these are activities that must be planned in advance, because the World Health Organization does not recommend either canceling or postpone massive activities, what he recommends is planning in advance at least 6 months before,” he emphasized.

Nieto called for a great alliance between the Ministry of Health, civil society and private companies.
