The Government of President Gabriel Boric announced the creation of a Regional Roundtable on Trafficking in Persons.
This will define the intersectoral protocols on the care of victims of human trafficking through coordination mechanisms between assistance and protection services for victims with benefits in the field of health, legal assistance, migration regulation, social assistance, education and an assisted return. and protected from victims to their country of origin.
This advisory commission will be composed of 22 public institutions, of which the Undersecretary of the Interior stands out; Presidential Delegation; Public ministry; Justice; External relationships; Defending; Women and Gender Equity; PDI and Carabineros.
Its objective will be to develop institutional and intersectoral actions that favor the prevention of the crime of trafficking in persons, the protection of its victims and the persecution of the criminal organizations that are behind its realization.
The RM presidential delegate, Constanza Martínez, indicated that “the formation of this table allows us to jointly and sustainably address the effects of organized crime and human trafficking as a result of this. Crimes of this magnitude cannot go unpunished, therefore We have discussed mechanisms for the prevention and prosecution of these along with the protection of the victims.”
It should be noted that the Ministry of the Interior is currently preparing the National Policy against Organized Crime to establish an effective response against it.
That is why the Seremi of Justice, Jaime Fuentes, pointed out that “the regional implementation strategy of the Intersectoral Table on Trafficking in Persons is a reinforcement measure in the fight against organized crime, preventing, repressing and punishing this modality by which obtain illicit profits through the exploitation of people, objectifying them as economic assets and stripping them of their agency as subjects of Human Rights”.
“We will find ourselves facing one of the most serious crimes against human rights that violates the dignity of people, so this table will also have the objective of receiving, accompanying and repairing the victims,” he added.
According to information handled by the Government, between 2011 and 2021, 309 victims have been identified in 52 formalized cases. 45% are male victims and 54% female, all mostly for sexual exploitation. Of this total, 25 child and adolescent victims have been identified.
