SNTP denounced the closure of nine stations in the state of Zulia on #6Sep

The SNTP indicated that the closure of the radio stations in two municipalities of the Zulian entity occurred, apparently, by “order of the minister”

The National Union of Press Workers (SNTP) denounced on Wednesday, September 7 on Twitter that the National Telecommunications Commission, Conatel, ordered the closure of nine stations in the municipalities of Maracaibo and San Francisco in Zulia state on Tuesday, September 6.

According to the SNTP, the closure that Conatel proceeded to carry out was due to an “order from the minister”; which would presumably be Freddy Ñáñez, who is the one who heads the Communication and Information portfolio, although it was not really specified who he was.

The stations that were susceptible to closure by the regulatory entity were:

  • Sensational Stereo 88.5 FM
  • Zulia Mia 91.3 FM
  • Kp 92.9 FM
  • Shelter 94.3 FM
  • Word 97.3 FM
  • High Class 98.1 FM
  • Destination 98.3 FM
  • Radioland 103.3 FM
  • River Stereo 107.7 FM

Many of these stations opened under the concept of community; some had provisional permits at the time of opening and their administrative status is currently unknown, says the portal COL (Costa Oriental del Lago) First Edition.

So far in 2022 there are already 21 stations closed until today. They are the nine that were denounced on Wednesday, September 7 from Zulia and these 12: Éxitos 90.5 and Calle 98.5 (Guárico); Active 89.3 (Anzoátegui); Topaz 101.5 (Barinas); Triumph 99.3 (Portuguese); Mix 98.3 (Yaracuy); Candela 92.9, Moda 105.1, NEX 100.1, HITS 92.5, Luna 95.5 and Impacto 91.7 (Cojedes).

Of that number, the closure of six stations was recorded in July.

The NGO Public Space collected data during August 2022 to prepare a report regarding the violations of freedom of expression in Venezuela in that month. There he documented an increase in these actions related to the intimidation of journalists and other citizens.

In this sense, the aforementioned NGO registered 19 cases and 27 violations of freedom of expression; indicating that it is the highest number that has been evidenced since March 2022, when 17 cases and 25 violations of this right were reported.
