Hearing of the Pernalete case is deferred for the third time in a month

The Center for Human Rights of the Metropolitan University of Caracas (CDH-UNIMET) informed the process scheduled for this Wednesday, September 7, that six of the 13 GN members accused of the murder of Juan Pablo Pernalete did not appear.


The preliminary hearing on the case of Juan Pablo Pernalete, who died after being hit by a tear gas canister a National Guard (GN) official shot at his chest, during a protest on April 26, 2017, it was deferred for the third time in less than a month.

The Center for Human Rights of the Metropolitan University of Caracas (CDH-UNIMET) informed the process scheduled for this Wednesday, September 7, that six of the 13 members of the GN accused “according to the accusations presented by the victims.

On August 31, Elvira Pernalete, the young man’s mother, reported that the hearing of those accused in the death of her son had been postponed to September 7, due to the absence of four of the soldiers involved.

The August 8 hearing was also postponed, this time because the defendants were not notified. Pernalete’s mother reiterated that they are still without justice, despite the fight they have waged for five years to make the truth known.

“We have fought for the truth to be known: Our son was killed by the GN and not by his friends with a bolt gun, as they wanted the world to believe. Today we continue without justice », wrote Elvira Pernalete in her account of Twitter.
