The future of the US and Mexico is not with China, says Ken Salazar

The future of the US and Mexico is not with China, says Ken Salazar

Salazar, who participated in the first bilateral assembly of the American Society of Mexico, pointed out that there are three pillars for the bilateral relationship to prosper: economy, security and education.

Regarding the economy, the US diplomat asked governments and companies to support the T-MEC with a regulatory framework for the commercial relationship. He stressed that “the cars of the future are made in Mexico, in places like Silao (Guanajuato) and Coahuila.”

“Fortunately we have a durable legal framework, the T-MEC. So each one – in the American Society – we have to support it, ”he added.

The ambassador highlighted the fight against climate change and the use of clean energy, something that both Mexico and the United States must do.

Regarding security, the ambassador assured that “there can be no prosperity without security. We have to work together, Mexico and the United States.”

He stressed that it is an issue in which all levels of government, companies and citizens have to work hand in hand. He recalled that President Joe Biden has been against having assault weapons on the streets of the United States.

On the subject of education, Ken Salazar spoke of the importance of young Mexicans going to study in the United States, but also of having American students in Mexico.

Salazar commented that there are currently 13,000 Mexican students in the US, while there are 360,000 Chinese. “We are going to change that number, we are going to reach 150,000,” he said.
