Cortizo Cohen receives the United States Secretary of the Navy, Carlos del Toro

The President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo Cohen, received this Tuesday the visit of Carlos del Toro, Secretary of the Navy of the United States, who for the first time meets with the president to discuss security issues.

During the meeting, Cortizo Cohen expressed his interest in strengthening relations with the United States to continue working together on the security of the Panama Canal and against irregular migration, illegal fishing and drug trafficking.

“Relations between Panama and the United States are unique, particular and based on trust, and thanks to that we can work together,” said the Chief Executive.

For his part, Del Toro highlighted the work carried out by Panama in terms of security and assured that the United States is implementing security strategies from various perspectives, not only in Panama but in other countries in the region.

During the meeting, they also discussed educational and security exchange programs to train in the United States, following what is reflected in some agreements on this matter.

The president was accompanied by Foreign Minister Erika Mouynes and the Minister of Security, Juan Manuel Pino; while the Secretary of the Navy, the charge d’affaires ai of the United States Embassy in Panama, Tanya Ward; Senior Advisor to the Secretary for International Affairs, Anne Gebhards; the military attaché, Navy Captain Rick Ursery.
