Brenda Uliarte, 23, the girlfriend of Fernando Sabag Montiel, the attacker of Argentine Vice President Cristina Fernández, was arrested today, local media reported.
The hypothesis handled by Justice after a weekend in which there were more doubts than certainties, is that Sabag Montiel did not act alone.
His partner had stated in a television interview that they had been together for a month, but had not seen him for two days before the assassination attempt.
However, the police investigation that traced the steps of the attacker through security cameras determined that the girlfriend had lied: she was with him the same day of the attack.
On the other hand, the main clue that Justice had was the phone that Sabag Montiel was carrying the night of the attack, but its content has been deleted. The judge heard yesterday, Sunday, the experts who handled the aggressor’s phone in order to determine why it was reset.
The cell phone had been retained after the arrest of the attacker last Thursday night. He was later handed over to the Capuchetti court. The first to handle the cell phone, last Friday, were federal agents.
Now the Justice is investigating whether the data was erased due to the incompetence of the experts or if another person could have done it remotely.
Cristina Kirchner’s lawyer, Gregorio Dalbón, had argued before Uliarte’s arrest that the attack was not just the work of a lone wolf. He assured that the assassination attempt was prepared and that other people knew the aggressor’s intentions, although he did not point to anyone in particular. “I can anticipate that there are more people involved,” he said.
According to the lawyer, if the information is confirmed, they will initiate another case against those responsible for this error, or, as he points out, a possible aggravated cover-up.
With the arrest of the girlfriend, and the cell phone incident, the assassination attempt takes on new dimensions.
