FIFA confirmed that there will be no beer at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. During the event, which begins on November 20it will not be possible to drink beer inside football stadiums during matches.
Alcohol is extremely regulated in Qatar. But FIFA has said that it can be consumed before and after the games, in the fan zones organized for fans of the participating teams. Inside the stadiums, only non-alcoholic beer and soft drinks will be available.
The sale of beer at the World Cup is an important financial issue for FIFA, as the Budweiser company has been a major sponsor for the last three decades. In addition, more than a million visitors are expected to visit Qatar for the World Cup.
As reported by the Daily Mail, beer stalls will open in areas around the stadiums and will close 30 minutes before each match starts. FIFA did not confirm this information, but a spokesman for the organization said that the idea is “to serve those who want to enjoy an alcoholic drink while respecting the local culture.”
Alcohol is not prohibited in Qatar, but it is only sold in about 35 international hotels and restaurants. Foreign residents can buy alcohol at government stores, but drinking in public is illegal.
