The cost of potatoes continues to rise in Huancayo markets and the trend will continue until January

The kilo of potatoes in the various markets of Huancayo continues to be high, the merchants say that this occurs because in the last planting campaign there was little production due to the high cost of fertilizers. And now that the planting season will begin, they fear that the problem will continue.

The delegate of the potato sector of the ex-Maltería Lima market, César De La Cruz Ramos, said that the cost of a kilo of potatoes rose 50% more, for example the yellow potato that was at 2 soles is now sold at 3.50 soles and 4 soles. The Peruvian potato is also 4 soles. Huayro potato 2.50 soles.

The merchant said that the decrease in the planting of tubers is already affecting the supply. He also mentioned that costs are expected to continue rising until January, when there is a new harvest, which is also in danger due to the high cost of fertilizers.

Another variety of potato that also increased in cost is the mariva potato, which is 3 soles per kilo. The canchán potato is the cheapest, since the kilo is 1.80 soles per kilo.

Potatoes for frying, such as perricholi and the only one, are also 2 soles per kilo. Only 4 to 5 trucks of potatoes enter the wholesale market when, before, up to 20 trucks entered, that is, there is a decrease of 70%.

Sales remain high, since for most families and also in businesses the potato is essential for the preparation of various stews.

In the stalls outside the Miguel Sotelo market, potatoes are found at a more comfortable price, such as 2 soles for the yungay potato and 2 soles for the yellow potato, although they are not the first-class varieties, which are sold to consumers, said the merchants Gregoria Limache Capcha.
