MIAMI, United States.- With more than 98% of the tables counted, 62% of Chileans voted No to the option of accepting the new Magna Carta, backed by President Gabriel Boric, several reports this Sunday night. Press media.

The referendum was supported until the moment of writing this note by 38% of Chilean voters, which ratifies the validity of the current Fundamental Law. However, last July, Boric announced that if the new text is rejected in October, he would bet on another constituent process.

At the moment, the Chilean president is expected to offer a message on a national chain.

According to a note from Infobae, the leaders of all political parties have been summoned to a meeting this Monday at the La Moneda palace (seat of government) to analyze the results of the constitutional plebiscite held this Sunday.

“By special request of His Excellency, the President of the Republic, I am pleased to invite you, in your capacity as president of a party with parliamentary representation, to a space for transversal dialogue on the challenges that we must face as a country to give continuity to the Constituent process”, reads the invitation broadcast by local media.

Last July, Boric said in an interview with the local channel Chilevisión that “if the ‘Rejection’ alternative (the new Constitution) wins, what will happen is that we will have to prolong this process for another year and a half (…) There must be a new constituent process. Everything will have to be discussed again, from scratch.

The new constitutional text backed by President Gabriel Boric seeks to replace the Political Constitution of Chile promulgated in 1980, during the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet, and was prepared by the Constitutional Convention that emerged from the plebiscite of October 2020 (when the ‘yes ‘ to the constitutional reform had a support of 78%), which in turn was a consequence of the wave of violent protests in the country and their repression.

The draft Constitution that Chileans are voting on today was prepared in 12 months and in its final draft it has 388 articles organized in 11 chapters.

In its first article, part of the general principles and provisions, it is established that “Chile is a social and democratic State of law. It is multinational, intercultural, regional and ecological”.

Likewise, it is established that the country “is constituted as a solidary republic”. “Its democracy (in Chile) is inclusive and parity. It recognizes dignity, freedom, the substantive equality of human beings and their indissoluble relationship with nature as intrinsic and inalienable values.
