HAVANA, Cuba.- From the Combinado del Este maximum rigor prison, located at kilometer 13 ½ of the Monumental road, in the Guanabacoa municipality of the island’s capital, prisoner Carlos Samir Cárdenas Cartaya denounces that members of the staff A specialist from the Ramón Pando Ferrer Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology (also known as the League Against Blindness) has denied him medical attention on more than one occasion.
Carlos Samir Cárdenas Cartaya affirms that he suffers from vitreous or hemovitreous hemorrhage (presence of blood in the vitreous humor), in addition to glaucoma and retinal detachment, diseases that cause eventual loss of vision. He points out that the three ailments occurred successively while he was a prisoner in Cienfuegos, for which he was transferred to Havana in order to undergo surgery at the Ramón Pando Ferrer Institute, which is located at Calle 76 number 3104 between 31 and 41, Marianao municipality.
However, he regrets, this operation has been suspended three times. Similarly, he notes that the rest of the patients scheduled for surgery had their dates rescheduled and have already received the procedure. As he explains, this has been happening since April and he still does not know when he will be operated on.
The prisoner also denounces that on Monday, August 29, they took him to the glaucoma consultation of the Institute itself so that the specialists could check him up, but in that department they refused to examine him, despite the fact that there was a doctor. According to what she indicates, she referred him to the Guard Corps, where they also refused to treat him.
Carlos Samir Cárdenas Cartaya emphasizes that for these reasons he blames the Ministry of the Interior and the Ramón Pando Ferrer Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology for his loss of vision.
On several occasions, opponents and political or common prisoners on the island have denounced that the Cuban authorities deny medical care. It is a common practice of the regime to repress inmates.
