Santo Domingo, (EFE).- The “intelligent” perimeter fence that the Dominican Republic is building on the land border with Haiti it is “a reality” whose process is going well and is due to “serious work” that is being carried out as planned to strengthen security and control along that border demarcation.
the minister of Defending Dominican, Carlos Díaz Morfa, affirmed this Sunday in a statement that “the process is progressing well. Soon the towers will be seen, one of which is almost finished; in pyramid 18, adding the two sections we have about 700 meters (of construction) and between (pyramids) 12 and 13 others there are 1,200 meters ready ».
Díaz Morfa, who inspected the work together with construction engineers, assured that the steel cyclonic mesh has already begun to be placed. «You have to see the roads that lead to both sides, the serpentines, the doors; all this is a process that is going well », he pointed out.
He explained that the work is the most “transcendental” in terms of security on the entire border.
The first phase of the border fence is currently being built, which will consist of 54 kilometers of paths for surveillance and maintenance on both sides, with reinforced concrete and a metal structure, 19 surveillance and control towers, and 10 access gates for patrol work.
The beginning of the fence or border wall took place on February 20 in the province of Dajabón (northwest) with the presence of the Dominican president, Luis Abinader.
Once this part is completed, the second phase of 110 kilometers will begin, which includes nine sections, and for which the design tender has already been called.
This second phase will have a structure in reinforced concrete wall, cyclone mesh and grid in steel profiles with concertina in the upper part.
It will have two land communication routes, watchtowers and gates in specific places, which will allow patrolling on both sides of it.
The two phases of the fence will have video surveillance cameras, ground radars, motion sensors at specific points, as well as drones with cameras for day and night vision.
PROTECT THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
When Abinader led the act of beginning the construction of the fence, he affirmed that its construction will serve to protect the nation, watch over the interests of the country, respect dignity and freedom, in addition to defending national sovereignty.
“With this act, we fulfill the sacred duty of defending the national security of our country and combating the threats that affect and concern us today,” said the head of state.
He specified that the Dominican Republic cannot take charge of the Haitian political and economic crisis or solve the rest of its problems, although the Dominican Government strongly wishes that Haiti manages to recover, as soon as possible, control of its territories and achieve the necessary stability. to hold general elections in a fair, free and transparent manner, managing to find the path of its own development.
He reiterated -on that occasion- that he understands that the solution to Haiti’s problems necessarily passes through the cooperation of countries such as the United States, France and Canada, which have shown themselves willing to work in that direction, and also through the support of the Union Union, the participation of the OAS and greater involvement of the United Nations Organization.
The Dominican Republic and Haiti, shaken by a severe crisis in practically all areas, share a land border of almost 400 kilometers.
