Court attorney Mirna Ortiz was confident that the court will impose sentences of 30, 20 and 5 years in prison

The Public ministry expressed this Saturday his confidence that he will achieve justice and the sentences he requested will be imposed against those prosecuted for the murder of the lawyer Yuniol Ramirez Ferreras and the acts of corruption registered in the Metropolitan Bus Services Office (OMSA) during the management of Manuel Rivas.

The court attorney Mirna Ortizcoordinator of Litigation of the Specialized Attorney for the Persecution of Administrative Corruption (Pepca)was confident that the sentences of 30, 20 and 5 years in prison that the Public Ministry requested in its conclusions will be imposed.

The accusing body, in addition, requested the imposition of fines and the confiscation of the assets obtained by the accused as a result of their criminal activity.

“Today we were listening to the closing arguments and the conclusion of the defenses of the defendants in this process. The last of the conclusions is left for Monday and then the court will withdraw to produce the deliberation to issue the sentence of the process,” Ortiz explained to journalists who asked him about the trial.

“Nothing new in the conclusions presented by the lawyers, more of the same that was being debated in the process and the accusation and the evidence presented by the Public Ministry are not weakened in any way, so we are more than sure of obtaining of the sentences requested”, he emphasized.

For the defendant Argenis Contreras, identified as the material author of the kidnapping and murder of the lawyer and university professor Ramírez Ferreras, he requested the maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, while he requested 20 years for the accused Manuel Rivas, Faustino Rosario, Víctor Ravelo Campos and José Antonio Mercado Blanco and five years for Jorge Luis Abreu, Heidy Carolina Peña and Lilian Francisca Suárez Jáquez.

The Second Collegiate Court of the National District, made up of judges Claribel Nivar Arias, Yissel Soto and Clara Sobeida Castillo, began the hearing this Saturday around 10:30 in the morning and concluded around 6:30 in the afternoon when decided to suspend it until next Monday, September 5.

The Public Ministry began on Wednesday, May 11, the reading of the accusation that contains the charges and the evidence of the case, concluding with the presentation of more than 60 pieces of evidence with which it claimed to demonstrate the connection of the accused with the crime and the acts of corruption in the OMSA.

The murder, committed in October 2017, is linked to acts of administrative corruption that occurred in the government transport entity which was directed by Rivas since August 2012.

Ramírez Ferreras, who presided over the National Convergence of Lawyers (CONA), was found dead with a concrete block tied to his neck by a chain, in a stream of Hato Nuevo, in West Santo Domingo.

after the fact, Argenis Contreras fled to the United States, where he was captured and three years later handed over to the country following the efforts of the current management of the Public Ministry.
