They try to assassinate Argentine Vice President Cristina Fernández

For his part, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez underscored Cuba’s “support” “for her, for the (Argentine) government and for the people” of the South American country.

After 9:00 p.m., the Argentine Federal Police arrested an armed man who was a few meters from the vice president, at the doors of her apartment in the Recoleta neighborhood of the capital, surrounded by Kirchnerist militants. Local television media showed images in which he is seen when he tries to shoot the vice president.

The incident is part of a climate of strong political tension in Argentina, after a prosecutor on August 22 requested a 12-year prison sentence for Cristina Fernández. The petition was produced in the oral trial that the vice president faces for alleged irregularities in the award of public works during her government (2007-2015).

Political leaders in the region have shown their shock at this assassination attempt and, in addition to expressing their solidarity with Fernández de Kirchner, have repudiated the violence. Pope Francis also referred to the event this Friday in a personal telegram.
