President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has assured that his intention to transfer the National Guard to the National Defense is to “shield it” and prevent it from going to waste as happened with the extinct Federal Police.
“This police force was created about 20 years ago and the truth was not consolidated, it was spoiled and with more intensity it was perverted in the time it was depending on the Segob, irresponsibility and corruption prevailed from above,” he said in a video in July 2019, before proposing the incorporation of the National Guard into the Armed Forces.
The president considers that this corporation has broken down and proof of this is that his former boss, Genaro García Luna, is today facing trial in the United States, accused of allowing the Sinaloa Cartel to operate in Mexico in exchange for multimillion-dollar bribes.
Initially, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had proposed that his reform initiative would be constitutional, however, the proposal will only contemplate changes to secondary laws.
In this way, the approval of the changes sought by the head of the federal Executive is practically assured, since the Morena, Labor Party and Green Ecologist benches have the necessary votes.
