Agreement signed to avoid cessation of operations of the banana industry in Bocas del Toro

Faced with the critical situation that the company Chiquita Panamá is going through as a result of the constant closures and blockades that are registered in the province of Bocas del Toro and the rise in the prices of inputs for the production of bananas, through an act of commitment, representatives of the company, the Union of Workers of the Banana Industry (SITRAIBANA) and government authorities agreed to seek solutions to avoid the cessation of operations of the company in this region of the country.

The parties agreed to work together in the search for solutions to safeguard the sector, the engine of the economy of the districts of Changuinola and Almirante, and thus preserve the jobs generated by the company.

In addition, they promised to tour the farms and agreed with the workers on the need to increase production; as well as holding open meetings in the communities so that they know the importance of maintaining the proper flow of the banana production chain.

The act was ratified by the ministers of Agricultural Development, Augusto Valderrama, and Labor and Labor Development, Doris Zapata.

The Chiquita company has been operating in Panama for more than 120 years and has more than 6,500 workers, 90% of whom belong to the Ngobe Buglé indigenous region. This is the largest banana operator in the country with about 80% of production and in the last seven years has invested more than 35 million dollars in tax payments to the State and local municipalities, adaptation of farms and modernization from the Admiralty port.
