The Minister of Education, Marco Antonio Ávila, confirmed that they are working on “security issues” together with the Ministry of the Interior and Public Security, considering the latest incidents recorded in the context of student demonstrations near the National Institute in Santiago.
As for those responsible for these incidents, who are behind the burning of a Chilean flag outside the emblematic establishment and who have been involved in several clashes with Carabineros personnel, the head of the Mineduc said, in conversation with TVN, that the objective of the joint work with the Interior portfolio is to “isolate these students, identify them and probably be able to carry out the expulsion processes.” Right, he said, “these are students who can’t be in this school space.”

Emphasizing that they are students from the National Institute itself, Minister Ávila pointed out that “they are a very small group of violentists, students who, without any political background, ‘supposedly’ agree to change through violence.”
According to the head of the Education portfolio, “this is quite complex, because these students who are really violent can threaten the lives of their own classmates and perhaps also against their teachers.” In this sense, he assured that those who carried out the acts of violence in the National Institute “are students of the establishment itself. And they are not, as was once thought, at least in this particular case, that they came from outside.”
The Secretary of State finally affirmed that they have promoted the application of the coexistence manual and internal regulations, and “when these students have been identified —after due process— they can probably be expelled.” In addition, “these families will be able to reach the Ministry of Education and ask me for a space to be able to continue the educational process, and I will guarantee the relocation of those students because the right to education cannot be violated,” said Marco Antonio, also a professor.
