Government authorities toured the works aimed at recovering the Tiburcio Cachón Center, for people with visual disabilities, in Montevideo. The reform began in March, through an agreement between the Ministry of Social Development (Mides), which contributes 14 million pesos, and the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP), which allocated 6 million to complete the 20. It includes works in the entire property, the building and the basement, and covers a total of 1,237 square meters.
The head of the Mides, Martín Lema, assured that the multiple interventions in the property and the incorporation of personnel will contribute to a quality rehabilitation for the users and to position it as a reference institution.
“We wanted to recover this center, which is intended for people with visual disabilities and which was in a very complex situation from the building point of view, which hindered quality rehabilitation,” emphasized Lema.
The hierarch was accompanied by the undersecretary of the portfolio, Andrea Brugman; his MTOP peer, Juan José Olaizola; the National Secretary for Care and Disability, Nicolás Scarela, and the National Director for Architecture, Santiago Borsari.
Reconditioning
The list of tasks at the Tiburcio Cachón Center includes the installation of an accessible ramp at the entrance, vehicle paving to enter, accessible parking, plans and relief models. In addition, devices for fire detection with sound alarm, perimeter fencing, new electrical installation and air conditioning, interior and exterior painting, internet and universal accessibility, among others, will be incorporated.
Lema announced that people who have regained their freedom will be included in the staff of workers who will carry out the works. In this sense, he recalled that the National Directorate for Support to the Released passed into the orbit of Mides in January and that this initiative allows job opportunities to be generated. The agreement establishes that, of the 1,237 square meters that will be intervened, 165 will be conditioned by people who were imprisoned.
In addition, the minister stressed that the Government assumed the commitment to promote the center, so the works described, added to the incorporation of personnel, will contribute to ensuring quality rehabilitation for users and will position it as a model in the region. Currently, coverage reaches 98 users and it is planned to expand it to about 150.
