The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Carlos María López (PLRA-Cordillera), accompanied by the deputy Kattya González (PEN-Central), participated in a discussion, which culminated with the presentation of a draft law “Sustainability of sugar cane of sugar and its products”, an event held in the Commoners Hall of the Chamber of Deputies.
The purpose of the proposal is to establish standards for the production, industrialization, marketing and consumption of sugar cane and its products and industrial by-products.
Likewise, it establishes the participation of the committees, associations and/or cooperatives of producers, industrialists and merchants, who are expected to influence public policies for the development of the sector.
“Sugar cane is one of the products that has the greatest economic impact in our country, both for the production of sugar and for the production of cane alcohol; I consider that the project is very important, because it covers all the stages, from the plantation to the industrialization”, said the president.
He indicated that, with his colleague González, they promised to promote the document, taking into account that it will benefit an important sector of our economy.
Organic production
The production of organic sugar cane was also the subject of analysis during the meeting. “It is a pride for Paraguay; it is raw material for a growing industry; An important part of the production is in the hands of Paraguayan family farming, however, this type of crop requires support for its sustainability,” said Ramona Vargas, president of the Paraguayan Coordinator of Fair Trade Producers.
It is important to mention that organic production is extremely important in family farming, since it generates a source of employment for more than 185,000 people, both directly and indirectly.
Let us remember that the Paraguayan Coordinator of Fair Trade Producers (CPPCJ), was created in 2016 and unites more than 10 organizations of small producers of organic sugar cane, certified in Fair Trade under the Fairtrade seal.
CPPCJ provides small organized producers with direct access to the market under fair and equitable conditions, creating a sustainable, supportive and quality marketing channel between producers and direct consumers.
