Maternal death, a ghost that still haunts pregnant women in Huancavelica

Yesterday was the International Day of the Obstetrician, and on this important date the work of these professionals should be highlighted, who are responsible, among other functions, for the health of pregnant mothers, who spend this stage of life at risk. but they have a monitored and adequate gestation, being so that, due to this, the region registered five cases of maternal death this year.

Likewise, obstetricians also perform a function of sexual orientation for adolescents in Huancavelica, and with all the more reason it should be reinforced, according to regional authorities, because the cases of adolescent pregnancies increased this year compared to 2019.

The head of the Obstetrics Service of the Regional Hospital of Huancavelica (HRH) “Zacarías Correa Valdivia, Nataly Elías Córdova, stated that, so far this year, Huancavelica has registered five cases of maternal death.

“Our service is in charge of maternal and neonatal care, and sexual and reproductive health of the population of the Huancavelica region. We work with the Mother-Child binomial to guarantee that the care is of quality and warmth”, said the specialist.

He added: “Being a regional hospital, we treat all kinds of cases, so to date more than 2,000 cares have been registered this year, and there are also patients with complications. Unfortunately, there were cases of maternal death. This year, there were five maternal deaths, which were not in the hospital, but are records of events that occurred in the provinces.

Faced with this reality, the obstetrician recommended pregnant mothers to be responsible and comply with the control and medical check-up.

“Deaths must be avoided. It is important that pregnant women carry out their pregnancy checks and comply with the instructions of the doctors. It is necessary to highlight the work of obstetricians and nurses who make a safe delivery possible”, said Fernando Clemente, Huancavelica regional councilor.

To this are added the recommendations of his counterpart Teobaldo Quispe in order to avoid more deaths of pregnant women. “Pregnancy is a very important stage for every mother. From the government, the health sector must guarantee the health and life of the pregnant mother and the baby. It is because of this delicate function that the work of health personnel is highlighted,” said Quispe.

Likewise, the obstetrician stated that another of the tasks that HRH obstetricians have is to guide adolescents on sexuality.

“Compared to 2019, this year there is an increase in cases of teenage pregnancy, mainly caused by the state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Elías explained.

She added: “We obstetricians made an effort to fulfill our functions, and even more so, when the pandemic occurred, therefore, it is worth highlighting the work of obstetricians,” said the professional.

It should be noted that, after 09:00 hours yesterday, HRH obstetricians attended a mass and then continued with their duties. Likewise, 50 professionals work in the HRH Obstetrics Service area.
