The coach had been fired in April of last year, after more than four years in office, after the Gremio was eliminated from the Copa Libertadores by Ecuadorian Independiente del Valle.

The former striker had been out of contract since the middle of last year, when he was fired by Flamengo, and in recent months he has rejected some proposals to give priority to his family.
