Peru registers inflation of 0.67% in August

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in Lima, reference for Peruraised 0.67% in Augustdriven mainly by rises in the food sector, the state-run National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported on Thursday.

The result placed in 8.40% the variation of prices in the last 12 monthsmore than double the annual target range of 3.7% determined by the Peruvian authorities at the beginning of 2022.

In the first eight months of the year, the accumulated inflation for the entire country it was estimated at 6.13%, said the INEI.

The official report for August indicates that “the monthly result was mainly influenced by the rise in the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (1.71%), Lodging, Water and Electricity (1.23%), Restaurants and Hotels (0.63%)” divisions. .

The increase in prices also had an impact on education (0.68%), health (0.67%), goods and services (0.51%).

Last year, Peru closed with an inflation rate of 6.43% when the Central Bank’s target was 3.0%, amid electoral tensions and the Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2020, the year the pandemic began, inflation was 1.97%, just above the 1.9% in 2019.
