Family remittances rise 38.4% from January to July 2022

Nicaraguans received a record of 1670.6 million dollars for family remittances between January and July of this year38.4% more than in the same period of 2021, the Central Bank of Nicaragua reported this Thursday.

In the accumulated to July 2022, Nicaraguans received 463.8 million dollars more than what was received in the first seven months of 2021, when they added 1,206.8 million dollars in remittances, indicated the issuing bank of the State in a monthly report.

Remittances represented 17% of Nicaragua’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2021.

“As of July, the dynamism of remittances has been supported by the year-on-year growth of flows from the United States (64.3%)”, as well as from El Salvador (12.7%), Canada (11.1%) and Mexico (5.7%). %), highlighted the monetary entity.

For their part, remittances from Spain and Panama registered a year-on-year decrease of 12% and 11.4%, respectively, he added.

The main countries of origin of remittances received between January and July of this year continued to be the United States with 74.6% of the total, followed by Spain (9.5%), Costa Rica (9.2%), Panama (2.2%), and Canada. (1.1%), detailed the Central Bank.

Record from the US

Remittances from the United States totaled a record 1,239.4 million dollars in the first seven months of this year, 484.9 million dollars more than what was received in the same period of 2021, when they totaled 754.5 million dollars, that is, 64.3% more, the source stressed.

For their part, remittances from Spain totaled 158.1 million dollars, reflecting a decrease of 12% (179.6 million in the same period of 2021), according to the information.

Meanwhile, flows from Costa Rica totaled 153.8 million dollars, being 0.13% higher than that registered in the same period of 2021 (153.6 million).

Nicaragua received 2,146.9 million dollars in remittances in 2021, 16% more than in 2020 (1,851.4 million dollars), according to official figures.

The total family remittances received by Nicaraguans during 2019 were 1,682.4 million dollars, in 2018, 1,501.2 million dollars, in 2017, 1,390.8 million dollars, and in 2016, 1,264.1 million dollars.

Close to 20% of the total population of Nicaraguan origin, calculated at 6.6 million inhabitants, lives abroad, mainly in the United States and Costa Rica, and it is estimated that half of them do so undocumented.
