“The macho model” triggers violence of men against women

«El modelo machista» desencadena violencia del hombre contra la mujer

In most cases, the reasons why a man exercises violence against women It is due to the right that he believes he has over the female, which originates from a macho model to implement control through traditional values of masculinity.

This is how the psychotherapist and expert in gender violence explains it, Nadia Ventura, who explained the reason for the increase in cases of abuse by men towards women and vice versa.

“He has the right, to be pleased, to be attended by the woman and that he is completely at his disposal and always available to him that he is above”specifies the expert.

Ventura further explained that, in most cases, the man exercises control in different ways and tactics with the purpose of planting fear and submission in the opposite sex.

“When they do damage, they break things, it’s looking for that intimidation. And when they devalue her, telling her you’re no good, you’re crap… And in the end everything is rooted in that model sexist of: I have to be above you and I have to take control in any way, so you have to do what I tell you, “said Ventura.

The numbers keep going up

In seven years the The Dominican Republic registered 473,884 cases of gender violence and domestic violenceaccording to research by the Center for Research on Public Policies (CIPP).

While at that time there were 589 femicidesaccording to the report that takes into account official statistics.

It is noted that in 2021 the highest number of cases of domestic and gender violence was recorded with 75,686.

Of these, 22,474 cases were recorded as gender and 53,212 domestic.

In 2020, the lowest number of cases of violence was reported with 57,448.

According to the report, the decrease in 2020 of cases of gender violencecould not necessarily be attributed to the fact that there was actually a reduction in domestic violence in the country, since in April of that year measures were applied to confront the covid-19 pandemicsuch as the reduction in the movement of people, restrictions on the sale of alcoholic beverages in public places and the partial functioning of public institutions and businesses, which could have influenced the underreporting of cases.

“This was confirmed in 2021 when the reported cases rose above 70 thousand, at the levels of the last two previous years,” says the study carried out by the CIPP research team, made up of graduates. Igor Bucarellimanager, and Rafael Lara and Julio Pena.

According to the analysis, the average year-on-year growth rate of gender-based violence between 2015-2021 reaches 20.39%.
