The Garrido sisters or the high price of peaceful protest in Cuba

María Cristina y Angélica Garrido

MIAMI, United States. — Luis Rodríguez Pérez, husband of the protester of July 11, 2021 (11J) in Quivicán, Angélica Garrido, denounced the reprisals taken by the island’s regime against those who participated in last year’s anti-government protests.

Angélica Garrido, 43, and her sister, María Cristina, 40, remain incarcerated in the Guatao Women’s Prison, located in the Havana municipality of La Lisa.

The Garrido sisters were arrested on July 12, 2021. Since then, they have been deprived of liberty. The demonstrators faced fiscal petitions of 10 and 15 years, respectively, which remained in three and seven.

Angélica and María Cristina were found guilty of the crimes of attack, public disorder and disobedience, charges for which hundreds of 11J protesters were also prosecuted.

Although the trial against the sisters was held more than four months ago, the sentencing papers have not yet arrived, a fact that, according to Luis Rodríguez Pérez, exposes the irregularities and the lack of due process on the island.

According to Angélica’s husband, the sisters maintain communication with their relatives by telephone at least twice a week.

Angélica and María Cristina Garrido are mothers of two and three children, respectively, who are now in the care of relatives. According to the Justice 11J platform, both are part of the group of 74 women imprisoned in Cuba, out of a total of 747 prisoners for political reasons and conscience after the massive protests last summer.

It should be noted that Angélica suffered paralysis in half of her body as a result of a stroke suffered in prison.
