MIAMI, United States. — The National Health Survey on high blood pressure carried out between 2018 and 2020, the results of which have been recently released by official mediathrows alarming figures on the medical condition of a good part of the Cuban population.
The survey, carried out by the National Institute of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology (INHEM), emphasized the so-called Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD), which cause nine out of ten deaths that occur on the Island daily.
In the case of high blood pressure, 37% of the Cuban population suffers from this disease, although 51% of hypertensives say they keep the disease under control.
It should be noted that the pathology is more common among women, with 42%, than among men.
The National Health Survey also indicates that the number of prehypertensives grew to 23%, from 15% in 2010, an indication that the number of people with the disease could skyrocket in the coming years, in line with aging population in the country.
In Cuba, one of the main factors of incidence in the appearance of problems such as arterial hypertension is the alcoholism. In that sense, 68% of Cubans admitted having started drinking alcohol between the ages of 10 and 19.
Also, 73% of people had consumed drinks of this type at least 30 days before being surveyed, a figure higher than that recorded in 2010.
Exposure to tobacco and its relationship with the early onset of heart disease, stroke and many other conditions was another issue that came to light in the latest National Health Survey.
78% of Cubans surveyed in the most recent survey began smoking tobacco before the age of 20. The investigation also revealed that heavy smokers amounted to 11.4%.
