Executive will invest S/ 5,865 million in water and sanitation projects

The project of of the Public Sector for Fiscal Year 2023 presented by the Executive to the Congress of the Republic, contemplates investing S/ 5,865 million for water and sanitation works throughout the country.

These works will be carried out within the framework of the National Urban Sanitation Program and the National Rural Sanitation Program.

“In order to continue advancing in the reduction of gaps, in 2023 resources for S/ 5,865 million (S/ 2,090 million in urban water and sanitation and S/ 2,608 million in rural water and sanitation) have been foreseen, which will be used to increase the coverage of water and sanitation connections and to improve the quality and sustainability of service provision”, specifies the document.

The Executive states that access to safe water and sanitation for all Peruvians is a human right and one of the fundamental pillars of the current government policy to achieve development and improve the quality of life in the country.

According to the National Survey of Budget Programs (Enapres) 2021, 49.5% of urban households had access to safe water, while in rural areas the percentage was just 2.9%.

For its part, the coverage of water through the public network reached 94.4% of households in urban areas and 76.4% in rural areas, while there are still greater gaps in coverage in access to sewerage or other forms of sanitary provision of excreta where coverage is 87.6% in urban areas and 35% in rural areas.

It should be noted that the Executive Branch has prepared the Public Sector Budget Bill for Fiscal Year 2023, in compliance with the provisions of articles 77 and 78 of the Political Constitution of Peru, and in accordance with the provisions of the Article 135 of the Magna Carta, which amounts to 214,790 million (21% of GDP) and contemplates a nominal growth of 9% compared to the 2022 budget.
