Attorney Enrique Sánchez Falcón alleges that the statements made by PJ are “unfounded concepts”, while recalling that his office requested the Finance Commission of the National Assembly in 2021, “chaired, precisely, by a First Justice Deputy” , the approval of the Special Litigation Budget, which earmarked 450,000 dollars for this case
The crisis between instances of interim government, chaired by Juan Guaidó, and some opposition political parties does not end. In a statement, released on the night of Tuesday, August 30, the special prosecutor’s office blamed the national directorate of Primero Justicia (PJ) for not allocating resources to address several pending awards, including that of ConocoPhillips.
According to Attorney General Enrique Sánchez Falcón, “it is false and irresponsible” to attribute full responsibility for the ruling in the award, which orders Venezuela to pay 8.7 billion dollars, plus interest, as compensation to the oil company Conoco Phillips.
Primero Justicia calls the inaction of the Attorney General’s Office “negligent” and states that there is no explanation to justify that Venezuela has not appeared in court in Washington.

But the prosecutor alleges that the remarks made by PJ They are “unfounded concepts”, while recalling that his office requested the Finance Commission of the National Assembly in 2021, “chaired, precisely, by a First Justice Deputy”, the approval of the Special Litigation Budget, which allocated 450,000 dollars for this case.
Sánchez Falcón reiterated in his brief that he is willing to answer the questions, in any form, that the deputies of the National Assembly elected in 2015 wish to ask, and also stressed that there are other pending awards that require the attention of both instances.
“It is up to the Executive, through the body of the Special Prosecutor’s Office (…) to carry out the trials as efficiently as possible, and it has been doing so. The National Assembly has been assigned to approve the resources required to pay the fees of the law firms hired or to be hired. We are carrying out our task, do what corresponds to you », he sentenced.
Another point they clarify is the hiring of the firm Curtis, Malet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle. Lawyer Sánchez Falcón assured that “he was never assigned the case of the registry for the execution of the award in the jurisdiction of the
United States”, since a separate contract was required.
«On the other hand, their professional services had been contracted for the arbitration process that took place in the ICSID, which -by the way- they have executed successfully to the point that at this moment it can be affirmed that in that case it has not been said the last word,” he explained.
