The president of the Republic, peter castlepresented a bill before Congress in which he proposes that August 30 be declared as “National Day of disappeared persons during the period of violence 1980 – 2000”.
The initiative was raised in a letter addressed to the President of Parliament, Lady Camones (Alliance for Progress), which bears the signature of the head of state and the prime minister, Hannibal Torres.
“We are pleased to write to you, in accordance with the provisions of article 107 of the Political Constitution of Peru, in order to submit to the consideration of the Congress of the Republic, with the approval vote of the Council of Ministers, the bill that declares August 30 National Day of the disappeared persons during the period of violence 1980-2000″, the document reads.
In addition, he points out that “The purpose of the proposal is to preserve the memory, sensitize the general population, and the authorities and public workers about the problem of missing persons. during the aforementioned period of violence; and contribute to the prevention of disappearances and the clarification of the events that occurred for the families of the victims and Peruvian society”.
The bill also charges the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, through the General Directorate for the Search for Disappeared Persons, with carrying out activities to raise awareness, recognize, assess and raise awareness of the disappearances of persons during that period.
According to the National Registry of Disappeared Persons and Burial Sites (Renade), 21,918 people disappeared between the years 1980 – 2000. Of this number, 39 were found alive and 2,679 were found dead. Faced with this, there are still search processes for 19,200 disappeared persons.
