The Commerce Confidence Index, calculated by the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV), rose 4.3 points in August, with the improvement in businessmen’s expectations about the future of the sector. The survey was released today (30), in Rio de Janeiro, by the Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE) of FGV, with information from 780 companies.
According to the survey, despite the index that measures expectations having advanced from 84.8 to 94.5 points, the assessment of the current situation dropped from 105.6 points to 104.2 points, which indicates demand is still falling.

With the scores, the overall result of the index advanced from 95.1 to 99.4 points, approaching the level of 100 points, which is considered neutral. Values below 100 on this scale are considered negative.
The economist at FGV IBRE, Rodolpho Tobler, assesses that the deceleration of inflation, government stimulus measures and the improvement in consumer confidence contribute to the spirit of entrepreneurs in the sector for the coming months.
“However, although more optimistic, this has not been reflected in the evaluations of the present, since, for the second consecutive month, the indicators that measure demand continue to fall. For the coming months, it is still possible to imagine positive results, but it is caution is necessary, considering the macroeconomic environment is still fragile and with some oscillation due to the proximity of the elections”, he explained.
