Eduardo Ortega-Barría on monkeypox: ‘The virus has been identified in people’s semen’

Dr. Eduardo Ortega-Barría, national secretary of Senacyt and scientific researcher, referred earlier to the presence of community infections of monkeypox or monkeypox in the country, detailing that there are two related cases and one of them was acquired in Panama . This, after the Ministry of Health (Minsa) confirmed the ninth case on Sunday.

He revealed that the virus has been identified in the semen of people, however, what has not been identified yet is whether the semen transmits the virus.

He specified that it is not a classic sexually transmitted disease as defined in the texts, “but today it is considered a sexually transmitted disease, because it is occurring in intimate person-to-person contact, during sexual intercourse.”

The doctor recalled that the incubation of the virus is between 7 to 14 days, even up to 21 days. At the same time, he said it is unknown if there are cases of sustained community transmission.
