Relations between Colombia and Venezuela had been broken since February 2019. On August 11, President Nicolás Maduro and Colombian Gustavo Petro appointed their representatives. The ambassador of the neighboring country is expected to deliver his credential to the Venezuelan Executive on August 29 in the afternoon.
The Venezuelan ambassador to Colombia, Félix Plasencia, arrived in the neighboring country on Sunday, August 28, to present his credentials to President Gustavo Petro and in turn “rescue” the bilateral relations that had been broken since February 2019.
“As instructed by our President Nicolás Maduro, we arrived in the Republic of Colombia to present the Credentials to the Government of this nation, we are eager to advance in the Diplomacy of Peace in this second opportunity that the history of restarting the Diplomatic relations between two sister nations,” the diplomat wrote through his account on the social network. The ambassador’s visit was also informed by the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Carlos Faría. The head of the ministerial portfolio asserted that Plasencia’s task is “to rescue binational relations in different areas.”
“Our ambassador Félix Plasencia arrives in Colombia to fulfill the tasks entrusted by President Nicolás Maduro to rescue binational relations in different areas, betting on cooperation and integration to consolidate significant advances for our peoples,” said the Venezuelan foreign minister in his account in Twitter.
His arrival in Bogotá was announced shortly after the Colombian ambassador to Venezuela, Armando Benedetti, landed in the nation for a visit with the same objective: to present his credentials, this time to Maduro, scheduled for the afternoon of August 29.
The two nations broke diplomatic relations on February 23, 2019 by order of Maduro amid an escalation of tensions with the then president, Iván Duque, due to his support for the opposition Juan Guaidó. With the arrival of Gustavo Petro to the administration, the reestablishment of diplomatic relations was consummated: The August 11both the Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro and the Colombian Head of State appointed their diplomatic representatives as part of the mechanisms to normalize relations between Colombia and Venezuela.
