IDB loan process advances to rehabilitate 25 beaches

For this reason, the Bank is committed to the fact that all its loans and projects are aligned with the Paris Agreement for 2023.

In addition, it plans to allocate 24,000 million dollars to climate and green financing until the year 2025.

Regarding tourism, IDB executives highlighted that one of the most important projects the IDB is working on for the Dominican Republic is the issue of beach protection and coastal zone management.

They stated that the country has about 230 beaches and that according to an evaluation, a large majority are damaged.

They cited the example of Playa Bonita in Las Terrenas de Samanáwhich has lost about 90 meters in the last 10 years.

In that sense, they said that given this situation, the IDB agreed with the Ministry of Tourism to develop a plan for the comprehensive management of the protection of the coastal zone.

For that, a mapping is being carried out to determine which beaches should be intervened first. That would later imply the intervention that can be from reef infrastructure, inversion replicas of the mangroves, recreation of the dunes to social issues, because even the very use of some of those beaches is causing damage.

They revealed that so far it has been agreed to intervene 25 most important beaches with the aim of achieving quick results, with the idea of ​​later being able to replicate them on other coasts.

They explained that approval is currently being studied and that it could be for January-February 2023. They added that for now the corresponding studies are progressing.

They highlighted that with plans like this, the IDB provides the country with technical advice before To be approved the financing.

“By trying to find these comprehensive solutions we try to be able to accompany the country from day one, not waiting nine months until someone has made a document, but we provide technical cooperation until day one”, stressed Katharina Falkner-Olmedo, representative of the Group IDB in the Dominican Republic.
