Benedetti was appointed a week ago as the new ambassador to Venezuela by Colombian President Gustavo Petro. His visit will last until next Tuesday and this rapprochement is expected to improve diplomatic relations broken since 2019.
The newly appointed ambassador of Colombia in Venezuela, Armando Benedetti, will arrive in Caracas this Sunday, August 28, to present his credentials to the authorities of Nicolás Maduro with the aim of reestablishing diplomatic relations between the two nations.
On his Twitter account, Benedetti stated that relations with Venezuela should never have been broken. “We are brothers, an imaginary line cannot separate us, much less a public policy of the State as happened with President Iván Duque,” Benedetti said in a statement before leaving.
We are heading to Venezuela at this time with the mission of working to rebuild ties with our neighbor and repair the damage caused in the hearts of our peoples as a result of a rupture in relations that should never have happened. pic.twitter.com/iXQmIFp20F

In this sense, he says that he not only wants to restore relations with Venezuela, but also “reestablish trade, which it is said that eight million Colombians live on.”
“We are going to look for an economic zone, tax exemptions and legislation that allows the Colombian government to invest in works that impact the development of the region,” he said.
Benedetti was appointed a week ago as the new ambassador to Venezuela by the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, and commissioned him to restore diplomatic and commercial relations with Venezuela.
For his part, Maduro appointed former foreign minister and current director of the International Center for Productive Investment (CIIP), Félix Plasencia, as Colombian ambassador to Venezuela.
The two nations broke diplomatic relations on February 23, 2019 by order of Maduro amid an escalation of tensions with the then president, Iván Duque, due to his support for the opposition Juan Guaidó.
