Mexico returns 60 irregular Cuban migrants intercepted in its territory

The authorities of Mexico returned to Cuba a new group of 60 irregular migrantsby virtue of the agreements signed between both nations, according to official media reports on the Island.

On a flight from the Central American nation, the group made up of 33 women and 27 men residing in all Cuban provinces arrived at the José Martí international airport, according to a report of the Prensa Latina (PL) agency.

The source points out that, after their arrival, the repatriated migrants underwent the established health protocol, which includes tests to detect contagion of COVID-19before receiving facilities for the return to their provinces of origin.

According to figures from the Cuban immigration authorities handled by the media outlet, so far this year Mexico has returned to the island 1,629 Cubans who left legally, but who later joined the irregular flow of people who use that country as a route to enter the island. the United States.

Another report from Cuban television reported on the day that the United States Coast Guard Service intercepted and returned 88 travelers who intended to reach the coasts of that country, including two minors, bringing the figure to 3,680. of people returned in 68 maritime operations, says PL.

The publication also establishes that to date 114 air and sea operations have been carried out for the return of irregular Cuban migrants, in which more than 5,500 people have been transferred to the island from Mexico, the United States, the Bahamas and other destinations.

During the past weekend, the US Coast Guard reported through its Twitter account that it had returned to Cuba more than 300 people intercepted during 14 operations on the high seas carried out by the Robert Yered and Pablo Valents ships.

The number of Cubans trying to leave the country by irregular means has been constantly growing, mainly motivated by the deep economic crisis that has worsened due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the embargo imposed by the US administration and the little effectiveness of the measures taken by the Cuban government to overcome the complex situation.

According to recent statistics from the United States Department of Customs and Border Protection, only in the first eight months of the current fiscal year (as of October 2021) more than 140,000 migrants from the Island have arrived in the United States.
