11J prisoner is transferred to the special prison of Kilo 8, in Pinar del Río

Carlos Manuel Pupo Rodríguez

GUANTANAMO, Cuba. — The political prisoner and protester of July 11, 2021 (11 J) Carlos Manuel Pupo Rodriguezcoordinator of the Union for Free Cuba Party (PUNCLI) and managing leader of the Emilia project, was transferred to the special prison of Kilo 8, in the province of Pinar del Río.

Juan Luis Bravo Rodríguez, member of the board of directors of both organizations, declared to CubaNet that Pupo declared a hunger strike after being transferred to the aforementioned prison, which is why he was taken to the punishment cell.

An official from the Kilo 8 prison who communicated by telephone with Yanet Bulnes, wife of the inmate, assured that he was demanding Freedom and Justice for all the political prisoners accused of participating in the anti-government protests of 11J.

Due to the fact that the pavilion of the punishment cells in the Kilo 8 prison is located in front of a lake, several inmates agree that the prison authorities take them to that area as a method of torture so that they resist the constant bites of mosquitoes. .

Carlos Manuel Pupo Rodríguez was one of the 11J protesters in the municipality of San Antonio de los Baños, province of Artemisa. However, his record of opposition activism long predates last year’s protests. In 2017 he was beaten by police major Ubaldo Ramírez Rivero, who caused a hip fracture. The injuries caused by the repressor meant that he had to undergo emergency surgery, with screw grafts in the femur and hip.

The National Directorate of PUNCLI and the Emilia Project hold Raúl Castro, Miguel Diaz-Canel and the entire ruling caste in Cuba responsible for what may happen to the activist. At the same time, they make a call for attention, alert and follow-up to all pro-democratic organizations and human rights defenders for the situation of the hundreds of political prisoners on the Island.
