Sunca strike due to worker deceased in UPM2

The construction union (Sunca) called for a partial national strike from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for this Friday due to the death of a worker at the UPM 2 site who had been hospitalized at the CTI for 17 days.

Walter Gabriel Morel Gonzales, was 52 years old and had a 25-year-old daughter; he was a native of the department of Tacuarembo. On the morning of August 8, he suffered an accident at work while performing cable stretching and tensioning tasks at height in the cooling tower area.

At a certain moment, the worker fell into the void and was supported by the safety harness. In the fall, the sling he was handling hit his head, causing a serious injury that caused him to lose a lot of blood for several minutes.

The operator was rescued unconscious as a result of the blow and was transferred directly to the CTI of the Tacuarembo Hospital, where he was hospitalized for 17 days in a very delicate condition. At 7:55 this Thursday morning, he passed away.

In a statement, Sunca expresses its solidarity with family and friends of the deceased worker, and calls for a debate on a national law on health and safety at work.
