MIAMI, United States. — The Cuban ruler returned to the Matanzas Supertanker Base three weeks after the fire broke out that destroyed four fuel tanks and blinded the lives of 16 people, including firefighters and Active Military Service (SMA) recruits.

“In an exchange with directors and workers from various entities, the president was interested in the details of the work being done to dismantle the damaged tanks, as well as the design of the new deposits,” the publication states.
According to the Cuban Presidency, Díaz-Canel “was interested in the working conditions of those who are dismantling and cleaning the entire area.”
The information assures that the Matanzas authorities have guaranteed accommodation and food for those who work there and that a medical post will be installed in the place in the next few hours.
The fire at the Matanzas Supertanker Base is already considered the worst industrial catastrophe in the history of Cuba, and forced the intervention of specialized personnel from Mexico and Venezuela to extinguish the fire in an operation that took almost a week.
Of the 16 victims registered only two could be identified: Carlos Santana Garrido, who was a member of the Special Fire Protection Command of the Camilo Cienfuegos Refinery, and the young firefighter Elier Correa, 24, who died in hospital due to serious burns suffered .
Dr. Jorge González Pérez, a specialist in charge of the multidisciplinary group in charge of the search and identification of the victims, stated at a press conference held on August 17 that it was not possible to absolutely identify the remains of the other 14 deceased.
The expert indicated that the high temperatures and the time of exposure to them made it impossible to compare the fingerprints, analyze the teeth, or analyze the DNA, which prevented a complete identification of the victims.
