Puerto Rican Solidarity Brigade Says FBI Contacted About Recent Trip to Cuba

FBI

MIAMI, United States- Agents from the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) contacted several members of a Puerto Rican anti-embargo group, on the occasion of a trip to the island last July as guests of honor. to the celebration for July 26.

As he told the state news agency Latin Press Milagros Rivera, head of the Solidarity Committee with Cuba in Puerto Rico, members of the “Juan Rius Rivera” Solidarity Brigade were visited by FBI agents in search of information about the trip. They wanted to interview them “informally,” he said.

Rivera explained to Prensa Latina that the investigations focused on a minor who was traveling with her mother as part of the brigade, but the agents “did not obtain” the information, she stressed.

The Puerto Rican activist told Cuban state media that human rights lawyers advised the group not to talk to FBI agents, a federal agency she accused of “criminalizing solidarity work and visits to Cuba.”

“The FBI’s action could be aimed at filing criminal charges before a federal grand jury for challenging the criminal blockade that the United States has maintained for six decades against the Cuban people and their Revolution,” he added.

For his part, Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel has already referred to the event and went to his Twitter social network account to criticize the “harassment” against the brigade, which took the name of a revolutionary leader from Puerto Rico who fought in the Cuban wars of independence.

The “Juan Rius Rivera” Solidarity Brigade has been traveling to the island for three decades and, according to regime media outlets, arrived in Havana with more than a hundred participants on July 1.

The brigade traveled throughout the country for a month, and some of their visits included the new Fidel Castro museum in Havana and the mausoleum dedicated to Ernesto “Che” Guevara in Santa Clara.

Rivera and about 60 members of the solidarity group also participated in the July 26 political event in Cienfuegos, the regime’s annual commemoration of the assault on the Moncada Barracks by Fidel Castro and his followers.

“July 26 reminds me of Fidel who we understand is the eternal commander of humanity,” Rivera said in a video posted by the Communist Party of Cuba on social media.
