The candidate for the Presidency of the Republic by the PSTU, Vera Lúcia, said today (26) that, in order to have freedom of the press, it is essential that there is no monopoly of private companies in the area of communication. In this context, the candidate defended the strengthening, through “freedom and autonomy”, of the Brazil Communication Company (EBC).
“We defend freedom of the press, but the monopoly of private companies in the area of communication imposes freedom on companies that today do not comply with a basic democratic requirement: equal access and the right to different sources of information and opinion”, said the candidate. , through its Twitter account.
In Vera’s assessment, the monopoly of communication exercised by media corporations “prevents the plural and democratic debate of ideas” and makes actors and social movements “invisible”.
The candidate said that the non-participation of less prominent candidates in electoral polls further reinforces the need to build a public communication system, “from the strengthening of the EBC as a public company, with total freedom and autonomy of content production by its professionals, with working conditions and better salaries”.
“We cannot confuse public system with State or government system. Therefore, we argue that the EBC be controlled by its employees (who will be selected through competitions), together with the population, with a plural and democratic management council, without government interference”, he added.
The candidate also said that one cannot agree with a “private monopoly of communication that does not fulfill the social function of guaranteeing the right to information, a central component of a society that claims to be democratic”.
