One dead person and at least 14 injured are reported after the confrontation reported last Thursday between a group of informal miners and agents of the National Police of Peru (PNP). The incident arose when the group of people attacked with stones and set fire to part of a police base located at kilometer 108 of the interoceanic highwayarea of La Pampa, in the region Mother of God.
The information of the deceased person, not yet identified, was confirmed by RPP and the Latina newscast. The aforementioned media indicated that the protest of the informal miners responds to the fact that they were against the operation against illegal mining in La Pampa, which took place on Wednesday, August 24.
For this reason, on Thursday, August 25, the informal miners took the interoceanic highway, at the height of kilometers 96, 107 and 108, near the community of Alto Libertad. Then this group tried to set fire to the temporary military base and that is where the confrontation with the police took place.
All the wounded were taken to the Hospital Santa Rosa of Puerto Maldonado.
Interoceanic unblocked after release of detained miners
After a dialogue with authorities, the informal miners they suspended their protest and unblocked the Interoceanic highway after the release of his colleagues detained due to the confrontation with the police and the burning of the police base.
The group of protesters blocked 12 kilometers of the Interoceanic, from 96 to 108.
